ATMOTUBE Wearable Air Pollution & Weather Trackers

Our team developed the industrial and mechanical design for Atmotube, a line of wearable air quality trackers by ATMO®. Over the course of the collaboration, several Atmotube models were released to the global market.

ATMO®, a San-Francisco-based manufacturer of air quality and environmental monitoring products, reached out to nAO.Design with the idea of creating the first consumer-level portable air quality monitor. In partnership with ATMO’s engineers, we worked on a line of mobile IoT devices measuring people’s immediate exposure to air pollution in real-time – Atmotube 2.0, Atmotube PLUS, and Atmotube PRO.

Atmotube PRO

nAO.Design’s team participated in the full-cycle development of Atmotube PRO, ATMO’s most advanced air quality monitor for end-users. The engineering team upgraded the technical characteristics of the previous model and introduced additional sensors for PM1/PM2.5/PM10. With this new functionality, the PRO is able to detect outdoor and indoor particle pollution on the go and provide even more detailed air quality analysis.

Sensors

Atmotube PRO is equipped with the most advanced mobile air quality sensors: a PM sensor for measuring the concentration of particulate matter and a VOC sensor. The device still features the functionality of a built-in weather station as it checks temperature, humidity and barometric pressure in real-time.

Form

To match the layout of its internal parts, such as a larger and more energy-efficient battery and new PM sensor, we chose a rectangular shape for its housing which also allows users to conveniently place the device on flat surfaces.

Design

Atmotube PRO's exterior design features an aluminium tube on the central part of its housing that pays tribute to the distinctive tube-shaped design of its predecessor – Atmotube PLUS.

Materials

Housed in a solid black graphite enclosure with a matte finish, the device features a grey aluminium tube at its center. Eco-friendly materials with no VOC emissions and sensor technology with up to an eight year lifespan make it a sustainable choice.

Pattern

The pattern puncturing the front case provides a sufficient airflow necessary for sampling.

Button

An indented black graphite button fits the size and form of the user's thumb perfectly when pressed.

Atmotube PLUS

Atmotube PLUS is a personal air quality monitor and weather station launched by ATMO® at the end of 2018. Together with the client’s team, we improved all technical characteristics of Atmotube 2.0: added a new sensor to measure atmospheric pressure, extended the battery's lifetime from 3 to 7 days, increased BLE range, and improved the antenna's performance.

Sensors

Sensors inside the PLUS detect volatile organic compounds such as acetone, methanol, benzene, ethanol, xylene, and formaldehyde and also measure atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity in real-time. Calibration is fully automatic.

Form

A coated aluminum cylinder creates a base to stand on and at the same time perfectly fits in your palm. Its minimalistic design with a sleek metallic enclosure communicates the product’s reliability and ease of use essential for a busy urban lifestyle. For smooth airflow necessary for sampling, we placed the air mesh with the concentric hole pattern on the housing top.

Materials

The PLUS has an aluminium housing with titanium coating for longer durability and elegance of the look. The bottom cap is made of plastic to enhance the performance of Bluetooth LE. Compact and light with a weight of only 28 grams, its miniature appearance doesn't compromise its functionality.
